General Assistance: Local Cash Help for Adults
General Assistance is cash help run by some states, counties, or cities. It often serves adults who do not fit TANF and are still waiting on or do not qualify for SSI.
It is not offered in every place. The name, amount, work rules, and time limit can change by county.
Who may get General Assistance?
A local program may help an adult with very low income and few assets. It may focus on people who:
- Have no child under 18 in the home
- Have a short-term illness or disability
- Are waiting for an SSI choice
- Can work and agree to job-search steps
- Face a short emergency with no other cash aid
These are common examples, not one national rule. The local office makes the choice.
How is it different from TANF or SSI?
TANF is state cash help built for families with children. SSI is federal cash help for people who are age 65 or older, blind, or have a disability and meet money rules.
General Assistance often fills part of the gap. Some offices call it GA, General Relief, Emergency Assistance, or another local name.

How much can it pay?
There is no national amount. One county may pay cash, while another may use a voucher for food, rent, or a bus pass. Some programs only pay for a few months.
Do not trust an amount from another state or an old post. Ask the local office for its current payment, asset limit, and work rules.
What may the office ask you to do?
A person who can work may need to register for work, visit a job center, or show job searches. A person who cannot work may need a doctor form.
If the program helps while you wait for SSI, it may ask you to apply for SSI and sign a form about back pay. Read that form before you sign it.
What papers should you gather?
- Photo ID
- Social Security number when asked
- Proof of address or where you stay
- Pay, benefit, and bank records
- Rent and utility bills
- A doctor note if health keeps you from work
- Any SSI or disability claim letter
Call if you lack a paper or have no fixed address. The office can tell you what else it accepts.
How do you find your local program?
Call 211 and ask for “General Assistance” or “General Relief.” You can also search your state or county social services site with those terms.

What if your area has no cash program?
Ask 211 about rent, food, medicine, bus, and utility help. A Community Action Agency may have short-term aid.
