Money Finder

Answer a few questions. Get your own checklist of free official money searches and open settlements that may fit you.

Step 1: A few yes/no questions

Have you lived or worked in more than one state?

Each state keeps its own list, so you search each one.

Did you skip filing a federal tax return in the last 3 years when tax came out of your pay?

Did you leave a job that had a pension or 401(k)?

Has a parent or close relative died who may have had life insurance?

Have you ever had an FHA home loan?

Do you have old paper savings bonds that were never cashed?

Did a bank or credit union you used ever close?

Step 2: Which of these have you bought or used?

Pick any that apply. We match them to settlements that are open or being paid now.

Your answers stay in your browser. We only count which topics people pick, never who picked them.

How the Money Finder works

Money can sit unclaimed in many places: a state's unclaimed property office, the IRS, an old employer's retirement plan, a life insurance company, HUD, the Treasury, or a closed bank's records. Companies also pay people back through court settlements and FTC refunds. Each has its own free search. The Money Finder tells you which ones are worth checking, based on your answers.

We are not a government agency, a court, a claims administrator or a law firm. We never see what you find. See every open settlement or read how to search unclaimed money, step by step.

Common questions

Does the Money Finder search my name?

No. It builds a checklist of where to look. You type your name into each official search yourself. Your answers stay in your browser, and we never ask for your name, email or Social Security number here.

Do the searches cost anything?

No. The state, IRS, PBGC, Labor Department, NAIC, HUD, TreasuryDirect, FDIC and NCUA searches on your checklist are free to use. Never pay anyone to search or file for you.

Does a match mean I will get money?

No. A match is a place to check, not a promise. The official site or the settlement administrator decides who gets paid and how much.

How often are the settlements updated?

We check the settlements every week and remove any whose deadline has passed. The official site always has the final word.
