VA Pension vs. Disability Compensation: Which Benefit Fits?
VA pension and VA disability compensation are two different monthly benefits. VA pension may fit a wartime Veteran with limited income and net worth. The Veteran must also meet an age or health rule. VA disability pay may fit a Veteran with an illness or injury tied to military service.
The key question is why the benefit would be paid. Pension is based on need. Disability pay is based on a link to service. Use this guide to choose the VA page that best fits your facts.
How do the two benefits differ?
| Question | VA pension | VA disability pay |
|---|---|---|
| Why is it paid? | Wartime service and financial need. | An illness or injury tied to service. |
| Must the health issue be tied to service? | No. | Yes, unless a VA presumption applies. |
| Is wartime service needed? | Yes. | No. Service may be in war or peace. |
| Do income and net worth matter? | Yes. | No. |
| What helps set the payment? | Family income and the pension rate that applies. | The VA rating and other facts in the claim. |
| Can you get both at once? | No. If you qualify for both, VA says it pays the one with the greater amount. | |
When may VA pension fit?
VA pension is based on need. It may fit when all of these are true:
- Your discharge and service meet VA rules.
- At least one day of the service was during a wartime period set by law.
- Your family income and net worth are within VA limits.
- You meet an age or health rule.
The service rule is not the same for every Veteran. It depends in part on when active duty began. Some cases have an exception. Check your dates on VA's pension rules page.
You must also meet at least one other rule. VA lists four main paths. You may be age 65 or older. You may have a total and long-term disability. You may live in a nursing home for long-term care due to a disability. Or you may get Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income.
VA also reviews family income and net worth. A spouse's net worth may count. VA says your home, one car, and most home goods do not count. Debt is taken out of net worth. The limits can change, so always use the current VA page.
When may VA disability pay fit?
This benefit is tied to service. It may fit when both of these are true:
- You have a current illness or injury that affects your mind or body.
- You served on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.
You also need a link between the health issue and service. The issue may have begun while you served. Service may have made an old issue worse. Or the issue may have appeared later but still be tied to service.
Some health issues are presumed to be tied to service. This can depend on where and when you served or what you were exposed to. If a VA presumption applies, you do not have to prove the link in the usual way. Read VA's disability rules for the full list of paths.
Income and net worth do not decide this benefit. VA reviews the health issue, the link to service, and how severe it is. VA then gives the claim a rating under its rules.
What if both seem to fit?
You cannot get VA pension and disability pay at the same time. VA says it will pay the greater amount if it finds that both apply. Do not stop or change a current benefit on your own. Ask VA or a VA-accredited VSO rep how a new claim may affect what you get now.
There can be real overlap. A wartime Veteran may have low income and a health issue that is not tied to service. That may point to pension. A Veteran with an issue tied to service may fit disability pay even when income is too high for pension.
Can pension include more care help?
These are additions to VA pension. They are not a type of disability pay. Aid and Attendance may fit if you need help with daily tasks, stay in bed due to illness, live in a nursing home, or meet VA's eyesight rules. Housebound may fit if a lasting disability keeps you at home most of the time.
You cannot get both additions at once. Read the VA Aid and Attendance and Housebound page for the rules and forms.
What should you gather for a pension claim?
- Your Social Security number and VA file number, if you have one.
- Your work, military, and marital history.
- Facts about your spouse and other dependents.
- Your household's gross monthly income and assets.
- Medical costs that no one paid back to you.
- Your medical records if you are under age 65.
What should you gather for a disability claim?
- Records that show your current health issue.
- Your discharge papers and any service records you have.
- VA or private health records tied to the claim.
- Proof of the event, injury, illness, or exposure in service.
- Letters from people who know when the issue began or got worse, if they can help.
VA can help get some federal records. It may also ask for an exam or more proof. Keep a copy of what you send and note the date.
Where should you file a VA claim?
Apply for VA pension through VA.gov →
File a disability claim through VA.gov →
It is free to apply. CalculateBenefits is not part of VA. We cannot decide your claim or file it for you.
If you will use a paper form, an intent to file may help protect a start date for your benefits. If you start online while signed in with a verified VA.gov account, VA may set that date when you start the form. Read VA's steps before you choose a route.
Where can you get free claim help?
A VA-accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO) rep can help with a claim. The rep can help gather proof, file the claim, or seek a review. VA says help from a VA-accredited VSO rep is always free. A lawyer or claims agent may charge in some cases. Check the person in VA's official search tool before you agree to paid help.
What other Veteran benefits should you check?
Pension and disability pay do not replace other VA help. You may also want to review:
- Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance for school and job training.
- Veterans Housing Guaranteed and Insured Loans for the VA home loan program.
- Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology Grant Program for home changes and certain devices.
- Vocational and Educational Counseling for Servicemembers and Veterans for help with a work or school plan.
Start with the benefit whose basic rule fits your facts. If you are not sure, ask a free VSO rep. Do not pay an unapproved company to guess.
