Medicare Extra Help can be worth applying for if drug plan costs strain your budget. In 2026, it can lower a Part D premium, remove the plan deductible, and cap many covered drug copays.

Some people get it on their own. Others can apply through Social Security at no cost.

What does Extra Help pay?

A person with full Extra Help can have a $0 plan premium and $0 deductible for a plan that meets Medicare's rules.

In 2026, a covered generic drug can cost no more than $5.10. A covered brand drug can cost no more than $12.65. The copay falls to $0 after total drug costs reach $2,100.

You still need a Medicare Part D plan. Not every drug or pharmacy is in every plan. Check the plan's drug list and pharmacy network.

Who gets Extra Help on their own?

You get Extra Help without a separate SSA form if you have:

Medicare should send a letter. Keep it. If the lower drug price does not show, call your plan and Medicare.

Who should apply in 2026?

Apply if you have Medicare and your income and resources may be near the limits. In 2026, the yearly income limit is $23,940 for one person or $32,460 for a married couple living together.

The resource limit is $18,090 for one person or $36,100 for a couple. Medicare says these limits include the burial amount used in the test.

A home you live in, one car, household goods, and some other items do not count. Work pay or help from a family member may also get special treatment. Do not rule yourself out from the raw number.

What should you gather?

You may not need to send every paper with the first form. Use true, best facts. SSA may ask for proof later.

How do you apply?

  1. Use the free SSA Extra Help form.
  2. Apply by phone or ask SSA for help if online is hard.
  3. Save the date and a copy of the form.
  4. Read the SSA decision letter.
  5. Check your Part D plan after approval.

A SHIP counselor can help for free. SHIP does not sell a plan. Our Extra Help document guide gives a longer checklist.

Can you get other Medicare help too?

Yes. A Medicare Savings Program may pay the Part B premium. QMB may pay more Medicare costs. Getting QMB, SLMB, or QI also brings Extra Help.

Read our Medicare Savings Program guide. You apply for that help through your state, not SSA.

What if SSA says no?

Read the income and resource facts in the letter. Ask for a review if a fact is wrong. Use the date shown in the letter.

Apply again if income or savings fall, a spouse dies, or the yearly limits rise. A past denial does not bar a new form.
